A Closer Look at Baby Lasagna’s 2024 Eurovision Song Contest Performance: “Rim Tim Tagi Dim”

Introduction

The performance of Rim Tim Tagi Dim by Baby Lasagna at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 stands out not just for its energy, but for how powerfully it conveys tension, anxiety, and uncertainty in contemporary Croatia. On first viewing, the performance feels chaotic, balancing moments of humor with a constant underlying feeling of anxiety. The pounding music, frantic movements, and chant-like lyrics create a sense of urgency that is both exciting and unsettling, pulling the audience into the performer’s emotional state rather than just entertaining. While the song’s playful surface may suggest lighthearted fun, the performance quickly reveals deeper tensions related to fear, pressure, and uncertainty about the future. “Rim Tim Tagi Dim” communicates something meaningful about contemporary Croatia, particularly the strain felt by younger generations navigating the area between tradition and modern life. Through its mix of humor and distress, the performance captures the conflict between staying and leaving, belonging and escape, pride in one’s roots and frustration with limited opportunities, positioning it as a powerful reflection on national identity rather than just a memorable Eurovision entry.

Lyrics and Music

At first glance, the lyrics of “Rim Tim Tagi Dim” appear playful, but they actually express stress, instability, and fear of an uncertain future. The song narrates the story of a young man leaving home, saying goodbye to family, belongings, and even a cherished pet while trying to convince himself that everything will turn out fine. In interviews, Baby Lasagna explained that the song mirrors the emotional stress of leaving home in search of opportunity, particularly regarding youth emigration (Baby Lasagna, 2024). Lines about panic, pressure, and the inability to turn back indicate that this departure is not solely exciting but emotionally loaded. The repetition of phrases underscores this tension; instead of offering comfort, it feels compulsive, as if the narrator is trying to drown out fear with noise and rhythm. In this way, the lyrics balance humor and distress, allowing the song to remain engaging while still addressing the psychological burden of leaving one’s hometown.

The choice to perform mostly in English demonstrates a desire to reach an international audience, while also revealing the tension between national identity and global visibility at the Eurovision Song Contest (Baker, 2017). English also allows the emotional core of the song to be understood by a broad international audience. At the same time, this choice allows for a subtle tension between national specificity and global legibility. While the narrative clearly reflects experiences common in Croatia, specifically youth emigration and economic uncertainty, the use of English distances the story from a distinctly local linguistic identity. Rather than weakening the performance, this tension reflects the song’s theme, which is the desire to move outward and be seen beyond national borders, even as that movement risks detachment from home (EBU, 2024). Therefore, the language choice becomes part of the story itself, reinforcing the idea that leaving is both necessary and disorienting.

The song’s loud, fast-paced, and chaotic sound reflects the emotional pressure described in the lyrics, making the listener feel the anxiety rather than just hearing it. The pounding rhythms and abrupt shifts create an atmosphere of urgency, reflecting the narrator’s inner turmoil. Instead of offering moments of calm or reflection, the song pushes forward continuously, reinforcing the feeling that there is no pause, and no chance to reconsider or go back. As a result, the audience does not just understand the anxiety described in the lyrics, they truly experience it through sound.

Staging and Visuals

While the performance features dark lighting and industrial energy, moments of traditional detail subtly interrupt this mood and add emotional depth. One striking visual is the crocheted textile draped over the drum kit and keyboard, evoking traditional handcraft and domestic labor often associated with village or rural life. Its softness and delicacy contrast sharply with the loud, forceful music and mechanical rhythms, creating visual tension between inherited tradition and the pressure to advance. Similarly, the background performers wear costumes resembling traditional or village-inspired clothing, representing figures of continuity and shared memory. These elements indicate that while the song’s narrator is moving away, tradition remains physically present but relegated to the stage’s margins. Together, these visual references ensure the performance does not entirely discard tradition, framing Croatian identity as something that quietly lingers in the background while the performer moves toward an uncertain future (Baker, 2017).

Performance and Movement

The physical performance of Baby Lasagna further reinforces the song’s themes of pressure and entrapment. Throughout the performance, his movements are sharp, repetitive, and forceful, creating the impression of someone caught in a loop rather than freely expressing themselves. These movements feel more like compulsive motion rather than a celebratory dance. The repetition of movement aligns with the repetitive structure of the song, visually reinforcing the idea that the narrator is stuck between staying and leaving, unable to fully settle into either choice. The choreography communicates tension through physicality, making the emotional struggle visible on the body.

The almost shouted vocal style adds a sense of urgency and authenticity, making the performance feel emotionally authentic rather than polished. This choice makes the performance feel urgent and unfiltered, as though the emotions are spilling out faster than they can be controlled. The lack of vocal refinement works against typical expectations of musical perfection, but it enhances the performance’s credibility. The voice sounds tired, stressed, and overwhelmed, which are qualities that align closely with the song’s narrative of anxiety and uncertainty (Baby Lasagna, 2024). In this way, the performance communicates emotional truth, not through mastery, but through vulnerability and intensity.

Identity and National Representation

Rather than presenting a polished image of Croatia, this performance demonstrates discomfort, frustration, and instability as central elements of national experience. Eurovision often encourages countries to display confidence, cultural pride, or idealized tradition, but “Rim Tim Tagi Dim” resists this idea (Baker, 2017). Instead of projecting success or unity, the performance highlights the emotional cost of economic pressure and migration, particularly for younger generations (EBU, 2024). This portrayal does not necessarily reject Croatian identity, as it insists on acknowledging aspects of national life that are often left unspoken on international stages. By centering anxiety and uncertainty, the performance offers a more complicated and emotionally honest image of the nation.

At the same time, the performance both aligns with and challenges dominant ideas of Croatian national identity. It aligns through its engagement with themes of labor, rural life, and departure, which are all experiences that are deeply tied to Croatia’s social reality. However, it challenges romanticized narratives by refusing to present these themes as nostalgic. There is no idealization of village life, nor is leaving shown as completely liberating. Instead, the performance frames national identity as something shaped by tension and emotional strain. This approach complicates rather than reinforces a singular national story, which suggests that Croatian identity is not stable or celebratory but transitional. In doing so, the performance uses Eurovision not as a platform for national branding, but as a space for expressing uncertainty and unresolved belonging (Baker, 2017).

National Identity

This performance shifted my understanding of Croatian national identity by portraying it not as fixed or unified but as shaped by transition and emotional turmoil. Rather than presenting a confident or celebratory image, "Rim Tim Tagi Dim" highlights anxiety, uncertainty, and the emotional cost of leaving home. These themes closely relate to current patterns of youth emigration in Croatia (Baby Lasagna, 2024). This aligns with Catherine Baker’s argument that Eurovision performances often simulate national identity instead of simply representing it. They selectively highlight certain emotions or narratives to make the nation recognizable on an international stage (Baker, 2017). Through its blend of humor and distress, the performance complicates dominant narratives of national pride, asserting that unease and instability are also part of the national experience. As a result, Croatian identity appears as something actively negotiated through movement, departure, and emotional contradictions.

Conclusion

Ultimately, “Rim Tim Tagi Dim” resonated strongly at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 because it used music, performance, and visual symbolism to tell a story specific to Croatia yet emotionally relatable across borders. While rooted in local experiences of leaving home and facing uncertainty, the song’s lively delivery and accessible language allowed audiences throughout Europe to connect with its core emotions (Baby Lasagna, 2024). In doing so, the performance demonstrates how Eurovision can serve as a space where national identity is not idealized but questioned and redefined in response to contemporary social realities (Baker, 2017). Rather than offering a polished image, Baby Lasagna presents a version of Croatia marked by anxiety, resilience, and unresolved tension, which explains why the performance felt both authentic and compelling.
